October 11, 2007 Event: Trade Crisis in the Seafood Industry: Importer Beware

In response to seafood safety concerns, the FDA has in recent months placed broad restrictions on imports of Chinese seafood, which are enforced by the U. S. Customs Service. In addition, seafood importers have faced increased liability from antidumping cases and now countervailing duty cases against seafood imports from China, Vietnam and even Norway.

This new reality of increased scrutiny from the U.S. Customs Service in food safety and trade has created great challenges for U.S. importers, including potential fraud problems, as they struggle to strike a balance between complying with the new restrictive standards and staying in business. About 18% of U.S. seafood imports come from China.
