December 3 Ethics CLE: Attorney-Client Privilege in the Age of Globalization

The attorney-client privilege in the age of globalization presents interesting and complex issues.

This CLE is designed to:
  • Provide an overview of attorney-client privilege issues that arise during international arbitrations and e-discovery in an international context.
  • Examine the differences between the privilege in the United States and in the European Union.
  • Attendees will apply the concepts learned via an interactive discussion of hypotheticals.
Speakers:
* Peter R. Day of Mercer Island Arbitration Chambers International,
LLC will discuss privilege and e-discovery issues that arise during international arbitrations.
* Nadja Vietz of Harris & Moure will discuss a recent landmark decision of the European Union Court of First Instance, regarding the attorney-client privilege and the status of in-house counsel. n She will also compare EU law with German law.
* Helen Moure of K&L Gates will discuss e-discovery issues in an international context, such as preventative measures, what to do when privileged information is acquired by another party through e-discovery, and the impact of waiving the privilege abroad.
* Professor David Boerner of the Seattle University School of Law will discuss hypotheticals incorporating the concepts above.

    MATERIALS for the November 5, 2008 Mini CLE

    Our November 5, 2008 Mini CLE at Garvey Schubert and Barer, entitled: Trademarks: An International Perspective - A Comparative Analysis of U.S. & European Union Trademark Laws with speakers John Du Wors and Randy Moeller, Attorneys at Newman Dichter LLP, Seattle, WA was a great success.

    This CLE provided an excellent entry point and introduction to U.S. and E.U. Trademark Laws, registration of U.S. trademarks in International Jurisdictions, and an overview of various international treaties dealing with trademark issues.

    2008 Foreign Lawyers Reception a Huge Success!

    Our Foreign Lawyers Reception, which took place on Thursday, October 30, 2008 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Seattle offices of Williams Kastner, was a tremendous success.

    Keynote Speaker Joel Benoliel, Senior Vice President for Legal and Administration and Chief Legal Officer for Costco, was a very engaging and informative speaker who enthralled our audience that filled the reception space to the brim!
